Provisions

The tournament site—Lake Eola Park’s Northeast Lawn—can be viewed HERE. Free two-hour parking is available directly along the tournament site on North Eola Drive, and $10 all-day parking is available a few hundred feet away in the lot behind THIS business. There are numerous sideline trees for shaded seating, but we recommend you still bring sunblock. If you are arriving by foot or car, you are responsible for your own seating. If you are flying into Orlando, let us know during registration and we will try to provide you with camping chairs. A public restroom is available on-site HERE.

Free water will be available throughout the tournament. Food is not complimentary, but there is a Starbucks, a Breakfast Cafe, and a Pizzeria all within a 5-minute walk of the site. Plans are still in the works, but we may even be able to deliver your orders to the tournament so you never have to leave the action.

Tournament Rules & Format

The tournament is played with kubb sets from JP’s Backyard Games and operates under the U.S. National Kubb Championship Rules v4.0 with three deviations:

Deviation #1: Teams may register with a minimum of two and a maximum of six players. During play, teams may substitute players at any time, given that they were originally registered with the team. Each player may only register with one team. No player may throw more than three batons per turn.

Deviation #2: The Orlando Open Kubb Championship utilizes the “Neighbor Rule” a.k.a. the “Elevated Award Rule” as described in Kubb United’s Rules for Open Play.

Deviation #3: In regards to raising inkast kubbs that have come to rest on their long edge—see U.S. National Kubb Championship Rules v4.0 Section II.D.10—The Orlando Open Kubb Championship agrees with Kubb United’s interpretation as described in their Rules for Open Play.

In the morning, every team plays six non-elimination games, each with a 20min time limit. The results of these Qualifying Games determine seeding for the afternoon’s single-elimination brackets—an 8-team Championship Bracket and a 24-team Consolation Bracket.

Each match of the Championship Bracket is a “best-of-three-games” match with no time limit. A third place match—between the losing semi-finalists—occurs before the championship match. The top three teams are awarded medals, and the champions’ names are engraved on the Orlando Open Trophy. Tournament results will also be immortalized on the Orlando Kubb website.

Each match of the Consolation Bracket is a single-game match with a 20min time limit. The 2nd place consolation team is awarded a registration fee reimbursement, and the 1st place consolation team is awarded a registration fee reimbursement and a modest cash prize.
